Woody Perfumes. A scent guide. | CRA-YON
Do you also love woody scents? Learn more about the fragrance family in this guide.
As the name suggests, woody perfumes feature scents reminiscent of various types of woods, including Sandalwood, Cedar, Agarwood (also known as Oud), Guaiacwood, and Patchouli. Despite some similarities with the Chypre family, woody fragrances generally lack floral notes. However, perfumers can add spices, fruits, or herbs to create unique woody blends.
This woody sub-family features a warming combination of spices commonly found in cooking, including cinnamon, cloves, cumin, and nutmeg. Sometimes, fruity notes are also added to add sweetness. In Sand Service we blend cardamom in the top note with cederwood and sandalwood in the base note.
Aromatic herbs such as lavender, geranium, basil, cumin, rosemary, and sage give woody aromatic fragrances a fresh, green twist. Additionally, barks, mosses, patchouli, and resins may be included to provide warmth. In The High Road you can find aromatic herbs such as sage combined with cedarwood for example.
In this family, flowers blend with woody notes to create a unique scent. Woody floral fragrances feature a strong floral bouquet at the top, while woody notes, such as cedarwood, guaiacwood, and oud, linger at the base. These fragrances are unisex, offering a perfect balance between the robustness of woods and the delicacy of flowers. In Passport Amour we have Damask rose in the top note combined with cedarwood in the heart note and Sandalwood in the base note.
Woody fruity fragrances emphasize juicy and sweet fruit notes such as peach, plum, and nectarine, which add sensuality to the often-dry, masculine scent of woods. This sub-family is perfect for warm weather when fruit is at its ripest. In Continental you will find Brazilan Orange in combination with Atlas & Virginian Cedarwood, Sandalwood and Oud accords.
